Four years on since the first HD channels were launched in Europe how far have we progressed? Most countries in Europe have at least one HD channel but compared to SD there is a long way to go. Chair/Keynote – Nigel Seth-Smith – Gennum

With end users split over the use of 1080i or 720p it seems the Europe and the world is destined to once again have multiple television standards. Interchange and quality will suffer. 1080p50 has it all, the simplicity of progressive scanning and the resolution of the 1920x1080 image format. But is it ready for prime-time? What can it offer and what is needed to build out the entire production and delivery infrastructure?

Panellists:
·       Andy Quested – Principal Technologist BBC
·       Hans Hoffmann – Senior Engineer – EBU

14:00 - Audio – The Essential Component

Chair/Keynote - Christian Hugonnet – Consultant to France Television

Often considered the hardest part, audio plays an important role in delivering the full HD experience. However capturing surround sound, processing multi-channels, keeping audio and video in sync, keeping a good balance and encoding all represent challenges. Seasoned experts tell us how they approach and resolve these issues.

15:50 - Infrastructures and Interoperability – Under the bonnet

Chair & Keynote – Peter Symes - Director of Standards and Engineering – SMPTE – “HD Standards”

Interoperability is the number one request from system designers and implementers. The simplicity of the one-way coaxial cable interconnect is fast disappearing with networked environments and file based media sharing. Add to the mix HD data rates, movement of metadata and proxy video then interoperability becomes a much bigger challenge.  Monitoring HD images has also proved to be a problematic.

·     Interoperability
·       Interconnectivity
·       Quality
·       Compression

Speakers:
·       Rainer Schaefer – IRT Germany – “Compression for HD Distribution”
·       Hans Hoffmann – Senior Engineer – EBU – “Production compression”

Keynote – Simon Gauntlett – Director of Technology - DTG

Chair – Simon Fell - Director Technology - ITV Consumer

Satellite is Europe’s favourite way of distributing HD driven by Pay TV. The lack of terrestrial spectrum limits the number of HD channels available. Even after analogue switch-off, the need to simulcast will remain. Cable operators have more control over bandwidth and IPTV operators are claiming HD distribution is feasible. Freesat will provide a further option, where will it all lead?

High Definition and Digital Cinema are already making a big impact in movie production and theatrical presentation. Resolutions beyond HD for TV are commonplace with projectors and even Flat Panel Displays emerging with 4 times the resolution of current HD. Higher resolution coupled with higher frame rates and electronic projection have revitalised the interest in 3D productions. NHK have a roadmap for Ultra-HD together with large speaker arrays for surround sound. So just when you got comfortable with HD the experience moves on…
